Why Alaska
“ To the lover of wilderness, Alaska is one of the most wonderful countries in the world. ” John Muir
Nestled on a rugged island in Southeast Alaska, our homestead is a testament to resilience, resourcefulness, and a deep love for the land we call home. Living in the heart of the rainforest, surrounded by towering evergreens, misty fjords, and abundant wildlife, we’ve built a life that balances modern needs with traditional, hands-on skills.
Through this blog, we invite you to join us on our journey of living close to the land. Whether you’re an aspiring homesteader, a seasoned Alaskan adventurer, or someone who simply dreams of a simpler, more self-sufficient life, you’ll find inspiration, stories, and practical advice here.
Homesteading
Homesteading is about more than just living off the land—it’s a way of life
From raising hardy chickens and growing container gardens in the rainforest, to preserving food and making the most of local resources like geoduck clams and wild game, we share the ups, downs, and in-betweens of our unique lifestyle.

Unforgettable wildlife encounters
Just be smart and careful right?! Animals are just that, wild animals. Once when working in Denali Park I was asked, ‘at what age do the caribou turn into moose?” And, “where do you take the animals for safety in the winter?” No joke.
There is so much to see in Alaska! Be safe.
